Bonnie Mine Road stormwater treatment ditch with Floc Logs

Bonnie Mine Road: Floc Logs Drop Dewatering Turbidity from 800+ NTU to Under 17

Wire mesh checks and Floc Logs in Bonnie Mine treatment ditchIn summer 2006, Moretrench was building Bonnie Mine Road in Bartow, Florida, when heavy seasonal rains pushed retention ponds near capacity. Dewatering already struggled with excess site water; more pumping would stir sediment and raise turbidity. Readings climbed over 800 NTUwell above discharge limitsraising risks of plumes, fines, and schedule delay.

Jute matting with Silt Stop powder at end of treatment ditchR. H. Moore and Associates evaluated the site and recommended a continuous flow-through ditch-check train with APS products for quick setup and easy relocation. Site-specific testing selected APS 703d and 703d#3 Floc Logs plus APS 705 Silt Stop powder in a duplex arrangement. Crews lined a long treatment ditch with geotextile, installed wire-mesh checks for mixing, and placed Floc Logs where turbid water flowed over and around them. At the ditch end, jute matting treated with 705 powder captured remaining fines.

The Floc Log and powder ditch allowed continuous pumping and direct off-site discharge by dropping NTU levels below 17—inside regulatory limits—without waiting for gravity settling. The system stayed least-intrusive and cost-effective while keeping the road project moving through the rain season.
