Sediment pond with fine suspended particulate at Holly Commons

Holly Commons Subdivision: Floc Logs and Silt Stop Cut Pond Turbidity Up to 98%

Bare soil around sediment ponds before stabilization at Holly CommonsWhen Holly Commons was under construction in Holly Springs, Georgia (spring 2006), Cherokee Silt Fence Company found poor erosion control: misplaced silt fence, no temporary vegetation, large bare areas, and slopes around sediment ponds and a blue-line creek built with poor fill that had never been walked in. Degraded straw matting left slopes exposed. David Hire and Joe Rucker aimed to fix the sourcestabilize soil, improve fencing, and clean the pondsrather than chase sediment after every rain.

Clear water leaving jute field and silt fence at 15 NTUHire sent soil and water samples to APS for a free site match. Two small sediment ponds were pumped through static mixers holding APS 703d and 706b Floc Logs, then into a flat treatment ditch of straw bales lined with plastic and open-weave jute sprinkled with APS 712 Silt Stop. Flocculated sediment stuck to the jute; treated matting continued downslope to a double silt fence above the creek. Plastic sheeting protected erosive fill in the ditch, and Silt Stop–treated jute locked soil on the slope.

The first pond held about 14,000 gallons at 400 NTU and pumped at 130 GPM to a final 20 NTU (95% reduction). The second held about 10,000 gallons at 850 NTU and finished at 15 NTU (greater than 98% reduction). Slopes were then hydroseeded with seed, fertilizer, and Silt Stop powder; remaining bare soil received dry powder under straw so seed and fines would stay put until grass established.
